Why We Don’t Start with Double Stag: The Power of Progressions in AIReal Yoga
By Carmen Curtis
One of the most common things I see students do when learning AIReal Yoga is focus on the final pose.
They see a beautiful expression of a posture whether it’s Double Stag, an advanced backbend, or an elegant inversion, and immediately want to know how to get there.
It’s understandable. We live in a world that celebrates the destination.
But in AIReal Yoga, we teach something different.
We teach the journey.
Recently, I filmed a new class for our membership called Star Inversion Progressions & Variations. While the class ultimately explores Double Stag, one of the deeper inverted progressions in our system, the real lesson isn’t about Double Stag at all.
The lesson is about progression.
Every Pose Is a Destination
One of the foundational principles of AIReal Yoga is that every pose has value.
Star Inversion is not simply a stepping stone to Single Star.
Single Star is not simply a stepping stone to Single Stag.
Single Stag is not simply a stepping stone to Double Stag.
Each posture develops its own unique combination of mobility, strength, awareness, coordination, confidence, and nervous system adaptation.
When students rush toward the most advanced version, they often miss the lessons available in the stages that come before it.
Progression Creates Safety
The hammock can be incredibly supportive, but support does not replace awareness.
In inversion work, students must learn:
- How to position the hammock safely
- How to maintain spinal length
- How to transition with control
- How to recognize when they need rest
- How to navigate asymmetrical positions
- How to enter and exit with confidence
These skills are built progressively.
Skipping steps may get you into a shape, but it doesn’t necessarily prepare your body to own the shape.
Why We Move Slowly
One of the things I love about inversion work is that it teaches patience.
Being upside down changes perspective.
It asks us to slow down.
To breathe.
To pay attention.
And to become aware of how our body responds.
Some days you may feel amazing upside down.
Other days your body may tell you that a simple Star Inversion is enough.
Both are successful practices.
The Goal Isn’t the Deepest Pose
Achieving the most advanced variation isn’t the goal.
The goal is awareness.
Control.
Confidence.
The goal is understanding your body more deeply than you did yesterday.
When those things are present, progress happens naturally.
And often, the most meaningful growth isn’t the pose you achieve. It’s the wisdom you develop along the way.
The Bigger Lesson
This principle extends far beyond AIReal Yoga.
Whether you’re learning a new movement skill, recovering from an injury, building strength, or navigating life itself, progress rarely happens through giant leaps.
It happens through consistent, thoughtful steps.
One progression at a time.
One breath at a time.
And one practice at a time.
That’s why we don’t start with Double Stag.
And that’s exactly why Double Stag becomes possible.
Ready to experience these progressions for yourself? Our new Star Inversion Progressions & Variations class inside the AIReal Yoga Membership guides you through each stage of the journey, from foundational Star Inversion to deeper expressions like Double Stag. Rather than chasing the final pose, you’ll build the strength, awareness, confidence, and control that make every step meaningful. Join us inside the membership and explore the full class today.
