AIReal Yoga vs. Aerial Hammock: How to Integrate Both Safely, Clearly, and Successfully
By Carmen Curtis
There’s a beautiful evolution happening inside many AIReal Yoga studios.
Teachers are expanding.
Students are getting curious.
And naturally, the question arises:
“Can we also offer aerial hammock classes?”
The answer is yes, and it needs to be done with clarity, integrity, and proper education.
Because while AIReal Yoga and aerial hammock use the same apparatus…they are not the same practice.
And this distinction matters more than ever.
Where This Conversation Comes From (My Story)
Before AIReal Yoga… before the trainings, the studios, and the curriculum:
I was a gymnast.
That foundation taught me discipline, body awareness, and what it means to push the limits of the human body.
From there, I moved into the world of professional aerial performance.
I performed at the highest level, worked in cirque-style productions, and choreographed for artists like Beyoncé. I lived inside the world of aerial hammock, where movement is dynamic, expressive, and often extreme.
And then… yoga found me.
Yoga brought something different.
It wasn’t about performance.
It was about listening.
Healing.
Understanding the body instead of pushing past it.
Over time, I realized something powerful:
The hammock could be more than a performance apparatus.
It could be a tool for healing, alignment, and awareness.
That’s where AIReal Yoga was born.
Not as a trend.
Not as a fusion.
But as a method.
A method rooted in yoga, using the hammock as a prop and not the focus.
Understanding the Difference: Same Apparatus, Different Method
This is where clarity becomes essential.
Because I’ve lived both sides and I teach both.
But they are not the same.
AIReal Yoga
AIReal Yoga is a yoga practice.
It uses the aerial hammock as a supportive prop to:
- Enhance alignment
- Support the nervous system
- Improve flexibility and strength
- Assist with injury prevention and recovery
- Deepen mind-body awareness
You might experience:
- Foundational classes
- Power flows
- Restorative sessions
- Therapeutic work
But at its core, it is always:
👉 Yoga first. Hammock second.
Aerial Hammock
Aerial hammock comes from the world I performed in.
It’s rooted in circus arts.
It focuses on:
- Tricks
- Flips
- Climbs
- Transitions
- Performance-based movement
It requires:
- Strength before execution
- Clear progressions
- A different type of coaching and cueing
- A higher level of risk awareness
👉 Movement skill first. Apparatus as the tool.
Why This Distinction Matters (And Why I Care So Much)
Right now, I’m seeing something that concerns me.
Studios are advertising “aerial yoga”…but teaching aerial tricks and flips.
And I understand why.
The word yoga feels accessible.
It feels marketable.
It brings people in.
But when what’s being taught doesn’t match what’s being promised, we lose trust.
We also increase risk.
Because a student walking into what they believe is a yoga class may not be prepared, physically or mentally, for aerial skill work.
And that matters.
Not just for the student…but for the integrity of both practices.
The Opportunity: When Both Worlds Come Together
Here’s the truth:
I don’t believe it has to be one or the other.
In fact, when done correctly, they make each other better.
I’ve seen aerialists transform their bodies through AIReal Yoga:
- Moving with more awareness
- Recovering from injuries
- Building sustainable strength
And I’ve seen AIReal Yoga students light up when they begin exploring aerial hammock:
- Discovering new strength
- Feeling playful again
- Expanding their confidence
This is the bridge.
But it has to be built with intention.
How to Integrate Aerial Hammock Into an AIReal Yoga Studio
If you’re feeling called to expand your offerings, here’s how to do it in a way that is safe, clear, and aligned:
1. Be Clear in Your Class Naming
Clarity builds trust.
Name your classes honestly:
- AIReal Yoga (Yoga-based classes)
- Aerial Hammock (Skill-based classes)
Avoid blending the language just to make it more appealing.
Because your students deserve to know what they’re walking into.
2. Understand That Teaching Is Different
This is one of the biggest misconceptions I see.
Teaching aerial hammock is not just adding tricks into a yoga class.
It’s a completely different teaching methodology.
- Different progressions
- Different cueing
- Different safety considerations
- Different goals
And if we don’t respect that difference, we put people at risk.
3. Start with a Strong Foundation
This is exactly why I created the
Aerial Hammock Foundational Training
I saw the gap.
Studios wanting to expand but without a clear pathway.
Teachers wanting to learn but without proper structure.
This training is designed specifically for:
- AIReal Yoga teachers
- Studios with low ceilings
- Beginners of all ages and levels
Because beginners deserve a foundation that sets them up for success, not injury.
4. Respect the Role of Height and Risk
As you begin to explore aerial hammock, one thing becomes very clear:
Height changes everything.
The higher you go:
- The greater the risk
- The greater the demand for strength and control
- The more precise your teaching needs to be
This is why starting low and with intention is so important.
Not because it’s “easier”…but because it allows for better learning and safer progression.
5. Let the Practices Support Each Other
This is where the magic happens.
AIReal Yoga can:
- Prepare the body
- Support recovery
- Improve alignment and awareness
Aerial hammock can:
- Challenge strength
- Inspire creativity
- Expand movement capacity
Together, they create a more complete experience.
But only if we keep them clear.
Final Thoughts: This Is About Leadership
As this space continues to grow, we all have a choice.
We can follow trends…or we can lead with clarity.
For me, this work has never just been about movement.
It’s about helping people:
- Understand their bodies
- Feel safe in their practice
- Build strength in a sustainable way
- And reconnect to themselves
Whether that happens through AIReal Yoga, aerial hammock, or both:
It starts with education.
It starts with honesty.
It starts with how we teach.
