The Evolution of a Teacher: Why I’ll Always Be a Student First

AIReal Yoga™ | Inspired Wellness Through Movement

From Practice to Purpose

Yoga has walked with me through many stages of life: injury, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, emotional highs and lows. And every one of those stages has been a teacher in its own right.

Each injury became an invitation to better understand the body. I learned how to adapt my practice, how to rest, how to recover, and most importantly, how to reframe setbacks not as obstacles, but as openings. Openings to study physical therapy. To learn from doctors and movement specialists. To investigate how posture, alignment, and nervous system regulation can all work together to support healing and longevity.

Pregnancy, especially, gave me a whole new lens. Things that once felt easy suddenly became hard. That shift gave me a deep sense of empathy for people who don’t come from a movement background. It inspired me to take prenatal teacher trainings and to explore how yoga can support the real physical and emotional challenges of the human experience.

The Importance of Continuing Education

I believe deeply in continued education not because it’s trendy, but because it’s necessary. If we stop learning, we stop evolving.

I’ve been lucky to train with incredible mentors and teams, from yoga leaders to medical professionals to elite performance specialists like the Red Bull High Performance Team. Working alongside physical therapists, doctors, neuroscientists, and coaches gave me insights I never would have gained from yoga alone.

These experiences have helped me expand my ability to serve a diverse student base: older adults, athletes, people recovering from injury, those living with MS or Parkinson’s, clients with brain injuries, and those navigating chronic pain. I’ve come to understand that true teaching means seeing the whole person and offering tools that support them, not just the tradition.

Teaching for Real People with Real Bodies

Everyone’s body is different. Some students need more mobility. Others need more strength. Some need stability. Others need nervous system support.

That’s why I’ve spent years diving into corrective exercise, functional movement, and foundational training, not to replace yoga, but to expand it. To bring more safety, integrity, and individualized care into every session.

I’ve been especially interested in how we support students with hypermobility. This is something I see in so many classes, yet it’s often misunderstood or overlooked. I want to equip myself and other teachers with tools to protect these students, to build strength around their joints, and to cue in a way that supports long-term joint health and injury prevention.

Integration Is the Practice

These days, I find it hard to label what I teach. Yes, I teach yoga. I teach AIReal Yoga®. But what I really offer is integration, a blend of everything I’ve studied, practiced, lived, and embodied. I use the hammock not only for asana but for mindful movement, nervous system regulation, pain relief, and post-rehab recovery.

In every class, I strive to give people a space to restore, realign, and reconnect with themselves. To move with purpose and build awareness. To feel safe and strong and supported.

I’ve also discovered a gift in watching how people move, in identifying imbalances and intuitively knowing what might help bring more harmony to their systems. One-on-one, this becomes even more powerful. But even in group settings, I believe teachers have a responsibility to truly see their students and offer thoughtful variations and modifications that honor individual needs.

Always a Student, First

At the end of the day, I’m still a student. Always will be.

There’s always more to learn. More to unlearn. More ways to evolve as a practitioner, a teacher, a guide, and a human.

I used to think my job was to “teach yoga.” Now I know my job is to support people. To listen, guide, and hold space. And to never stop growing, so that I can continue to meet people exactly where they are, with love, empathy, and the best tools I have to offer.

The evolution of a teacher never stops. Join me in class or in teacher training to keep learning, growing, and moving together.
